Introduction

  • Around 74% of total population of India living it its villages and as per the estimate about 330,000 from 825,000 village and habitation are not connected with road.
  • Due to this, such people are unable to access the market, schools, hospitals and other essential needs and have to deal with a lot of problem in their day to day life.
  • To overcome such issue and provide basic needs to such habitations, the central government announced a scheme in the year 2000 called 'Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana'.
  • Under this, the central government with the help of state government aim to provide all weather road connectivity.
  • Initially the scheme was centrally sponsored but later after some modification the funding a pattern changed to 60:40 for all states except 8 North eastern and 3 Himalayan states where the ratio is 90:10.
  • Since 2000, till 2022, the 1,5719 habitation have been successfully connected with all weather road.
  • For its implementation, the state and UT government will identify the one or two agency who will make a district rural road plan as per the eligibility.
  • Thereupon, this plan is forwarded to state level standing committee, upon approval the state government will forward the proposal the ministry of rural development.
  • Sanctioned project is likely to execute in a period of 9-12 months.
  • As per the statistics; 753,932 KMs road length is completed and 8,920 road work is under progress.
  • Currently, this is the third stage of the PMGSY that was launched in 2019, where government focuses on consolidation of 1.25 Lakh KM through routes and connected the habitation to the agricultural markets, Higher secondary school, and hospitals.
  • In the first stage of PMGSY-I the main focus is to provide rural connectivity. Later, in 2012 the PMGSY-II was announced where the prime focus is to improve the maintenance and consolidation of existing rural road networks.

  • People may easily access the markets, school, healthcare, and other essential activities.
  • Small business and entrepreneurship may seek growth after faster connectivity with the metro cities.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The minimum population of the rural area to connect with the road should be 500 person.
    • However, in case of hilly area this population size should not be less than 250.
  • As the scheme, is funded by the state and central government so the availability of funds is also a key eligibility.

Documents Required

  • No documents are required for this scheme, the agency formed by the state government will process the application after identifying the required conditions.

How to apply

  • Individuals cannot apply for the PMGSY of their own.
  • If they fulfil the conditions but are still deprived of the benefits of the scheme, they can approach their local administration for assistance.
  • For this, they can contact their gram panchayat or others.
